LabLog 21 - Batteries not included. . . or are they?
Mon, 06/29/2009 - 09:46 — LabRat
Well hello there. . . I have no good excuse for the lapse in updates - sorry. We continue to plow ahead, though, mostly with business stuff lately. Also, as some of you suspected, we've been a bit tied-up with our day jobs :(
I was reading through some older comments and realized something I've been taking for granted - like the earth being flat, the moon's made of cheese and Santa's been shagging the tooth fairy for years.
In the early days we had plenty of spirited discussion about this, but now it seems like a no-brainer.
Rubbot will not run on batteries.
There, I said it. I can't unsay it.
Settle down. . . before you throw your monitor out the window and smash your head against your keyboard, listen to our reasoning.
Dude's need power.
It's true. If you've ever bought one of those crappy acrylic-pipe-based male sex toys, you'd know they come with two D-Cell batteries. I haven't seen those batteries since my old boom box.
My girlfriend's sex toys run on little coin cell batteries. The kind you find in calculators and watches.
Rubbot is a high-powered male sex machine. It uses about 20 watts of power when it's running full steam. You may remember this episode.
I can promise you that Rubbot churns through batteries very quickly. The fear is that you'd have to be constantly reminding yourself to charge the batteries.
Imagine you have the house to yourself, open your sock drawer only to find a dead Rubbot.
Imagine that you're at the height of passion. Ready to explode. Ready to sing from the hill. Then. . . trattle. . . trattle. . putt . . . spoing. . . Rubbot grinds to a halt and rests flaccid in your lap.
We believe Rubbot will see most of it's action within arms reach of a computer and a good 'ol A/C power strip.
Forget the hassle, cost, and weight of batteries. Just plug the damn thing in and go!
Should you want to take Rubbot on a trip - we've designed it to run on 12 volts so you can plug it into your car (not while driving, of course. . . )
We'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Also, thanks for your continued tenacity and patience. We'll get there before too long - at it will be glorious.

More power better dedicated source great idea!
-Friday your favorite day of the week
good move. my wife and switched to japanese magic wand like AC powered toys a few years back and never looked back.
batteries are expensive, don't last long enough, and don't provide enough power, fun for an egg / bullet kind of toy but not for serious use. we still have rabbit like vibes but never use them, the sheer power, duration and ease of magic wand like vibes just rules
REPO same stuff different day. whats up ? still havnt seen are heard about pricing and your goal when your going to release this item.Tell us if you are or amnot going to ever finish.
Come on folks, this is just silly, no updates over the holidays. Are you guys europeans or what ? I thought americans were hard workers.
You should get an Obama stimulus-package for inventing an item that seemably is totally unaffected by the financial crisis, if one should judge by the online response.
Hello? Anyone home? Is the toy so awesome you can't get to your computer?
ok almost two months have passed since we heard about no batteries... did you use the extra space for anything good?
hmmmm, hmmmm, hmmm....anything new to report?
Impatient Smitty in KY
hmm... lots to consider here. you can get some pretty powerful ni-mh or lithium ion/polymer batteries now.
but for the power it uses... my 9AH 120V power pack i use when out in the boonies (it's from black and decker) has a max of about 12 watts. that thing pulls 20? batteries just won't work. and the black and decker gizmo is pretty big and heavy, not the sort of batter you can cram into a sex toy.
Make it rechargeable Li-ion so no memory effect. Just make sure it's has a quickcharge feature for those extra horny days... How long is it really gonna need to run per use if it's a good product? Can't be too long, right? If cost is an issue, make it an upgrade option.
Labrat, I have to completely agree. Even in the early build phases (and especially after you added the nub) I wasn't sure how "shakin hands with the robotic man" was going to happen with batteries. With a constant source of clean power this thing will work great. Plus, I really don't think that a "corded" Rubbot is going to detract from the experience.
Has the idea of rechargeable been approached, if I can drive 150 to 200 screws on a charge with my drill driver shouldn't a comparable option be at the very least feasible? I fully understand the weight issue but there are 9.6v and even 14v batteries (Ni-cad and lion) which are getting smaller even in the power tool market every day.
i love power and if needed i can plug it in but cordless is a spectacular feature, and selling point, as is rechargeable. Perhaps dual source?
Power to the people, man, power to the people.
I agree. More Power! The tool man would be proud.
Wired power is a great way to go. Because sometimes it takes longer and runing out of juice just before launch is like the door bell ringing just before launch.
One wire is better than two like "Real Touch", It takes power and a USB and a computer and lots of cash to run the programs.
Rubot= buy once and use and use and use
real touch= buy once and pay to use and pay to use and pay to use.
SideWinder
yay! update...i concur with all of the above statements, i.e. making the cord tangle free and the AC converter not huge if possible and what not....men are men for a reason and thus WE LIKE POWER....
Keep up the good stuff...
Best Regards,
Surprisingly Horny
POWER is Good!!
No batteries is great, I hate replacing batteries they get so expensive
nothing more upsetting than running low on batteries, when you need a little help from the rubbot
AC rules!!!
Yay! They're not dead after all. I thought we'd have to break the door down to get rotting corpes out of the building.
Interesting news about the batteries/AC situation. I'm not sure what I think about it yet. Lighter, more powerful, but not as portable.
Hmmmm...
Yeah! Pow-er, pow-er, pow-er. That's what we need.
Ooh, 12V? One could use a common solar panel to run it while, uh, traveling. Woot.
Deckard
No batteries, well OK just make sure the cord is long enough and lite enough not to get in the way.
A/C sounds like just the way to go, all the best toys use it. My one question is; Are built in rechargeable batteries a total no go? Or even the Lithium Ion that you have to remove to recharge (Like in Digital Cameras) Either way what matters is power, though cordless would be a great liberator. I certainly wouldn't mind paying a little more for it. Provided the power is the same and the battery life decent.
A/C power sounds great. I personally don't want to have to deal with batteries at all. And, I love the 12v idea, sometimes its nice to go and blow one off out in the fresh air, or in your car, lol. Awesome!!!!!!
i agree with all of the other guys, ditch the batteries, and we'll end up with a full fledged male masturbation device instead of just a sex toy. every other toy i've tried fails miserably to actually stimulate you, because the motors are too weak, the top speed is too slow or the motion isn't just right. kudos on choosing function over form. nobody is really going to care exactly what this looks like, we just want it to work every time perfectly.
I support direct power! My ex-girlfriend's Hitachi Magic Wand plugs into the wall. So should this toy.
Are you sure the car adapter is a good idea? I mean its not really a private place and i know what people will do with it. Sounds like trouble to me.
Thank Christ you are back, was beginning to think it was all pie in the sky stuff. A/C works, no chance of getting caught half cocked. When can we have a look at the latest prototype? Are you nearly ready for the second round of testing? Make sure this time you think of us outside of the US! News News News, please don't keep us waiting too long for the next instalment.
Glad to see you're still with us! I like the idea of A/C and ability to run on 12V. Way to give us options!! Looking forward to more updates and hoping your day jobs don't keep you away as long in the future!
Huh, no batteries? I'm not opposed to using A/C power. Don't make it cumbersome and we're good.
Getting rid of the batteries is definitely the right decision. Are you planning on using the real estate for something else?
This definitely seems like a realistic choice to go with for the majority.
Sweet! I knew you guys hadn't given up on us! I love the idea of not running it on batteries, i say the more power the better!
Glad to see an update. Is there a big demand for this sort of thing on-the-go though? Maybe it adds that element of danger
Looking forward to it, nonetheless.
w00t Glad to hear from you after such a long hiatus, I like the plug it into your car thing, watch out for my swerving vehicle...lol I was getting worried something went hay wire and the project was scrapped. hope to see something soon, patiently waiting..Tacostain
