LabLog 20 - That was so Beta
Sun, 03/01/2009 - 17:01 — LabRat
Hello loyal Ruboneers - I'll admit, the blogging has been a little. . . shall we say "light", but fear not - Rubbot is evolving and i dare say the improvements should propel Rubbot from being stimulating to more like what the hell was that? and can i have another!?
This claim may be a little premature since we're just having the new prototypes fabricated now. If they perform anything like our duct tape and epoxy - tweaked out betas. . . it will be on earth as it is in heaven.
Since the design has evolved so much, we feel that we cannot call it Beta anymore. So we're going Gamma now!
We've gotten in there and done a major overhaul; improving noise and reliability - along with the exciting performance upgrades.
The biggest drop-you-to-your-knees, tremble-inducing design change is in the vibration strategy. Namely, we moved from the beloved "vibrating tongue" to the focused "intensity knub".
To be honest, I was resistant to removing the tongue. Along with vibration, it provided easy access to open up Rubbot and tinker. In the end, we listened to your comments and suggestions and agreed that it was more important to optimize out-of-the-box performance than make it "hackable".
The added bonus of the tongue removal (hmmm. . . that sounds painful) is that it's much easier to make water-resistant now! So maybe Rubbot can be a Tub bot. . .
We're assembling the Gamma version this coming week - so I'll be sure to let you know how it goes!

I would like to test this machine
Wow! This project is still going. That's great. I'm really excited. I think I'll buy as soon as it comes on the market. Question though, if it's hands-free, how do you accommodate different sized guys? Like, is it soft and pliable so that it can stretch or constrict to fit different sizes and keep the nub positioned in just the right place?
REPO just got email today RealTouch will be released in june
REPO I agree its been way to long. Im really starting to loose interest in your product.
i can understand your frustration, and i feel your pain. we're hoping that june will be a big month for us though!

how do u get to test a machine??
How about just getting this toy on the market so we don't wait much longer, you can always make rubbot 2.
Besides nothing comes out perfect the first time anyway, tho
it seems to be perfect enough already!
thanks for the comment. i hear you. believe me, we've had a lot of discussion around here on that topic.
our biggest obstacle is that we have day jobs.

Ok, not to be a pain in the ass, but when you say
"We're assembling the Gamma version this coming week - so I'll be sure to let you know how it goes! "
I kinda expect an update, relatively soon.
Just poke your head out the door and say, "Everything is still cool." and duck back in again.

ha ha! fair enough. I'll poke my head in the door today - promise!

Awesome. Glad to hear of all of the progress, especially the intensity knub.
I have a couple of questions :
- How do you charge or power the rubbot ? Is it USB chargeable, or does it run on any other batteries ? Can you power it from a wall socket ?
- Is the electronics inside the rubbot programmable, to create different variations on using vibration and "shaking" ? Or is the rubbot just something you control with the two switches that one can see ?

Quick question...whats with the bumps on the inside sides 90 degrees away from the toung? is that for more weight or less noise?
good to see you guys are making progress
Thanks for the update. I am interested in how the intensity nub works. My first thought was it looked uncomfortable but I suspect you have made sure it isn't.
Thanks
Very good that you added a knub rather than a tounge. What type of vibrator is mounted behind the knub ? Is it a weight-swinging vibrator, or some other form of vibrator that is used ? It would be interesting if the knub was a piston-like system rather than connected to some sort of weight-swinging solution. That would make it possible to a larger extent control the frequency of the vibrations, and to also have large vibrations at a low speed, something not possible with a weight-swining solution. Optimally I would think the knub should move sideways as opposed to up and down, but this might not be the case with the other parts of the rubbot.
Good to see that you listned to comments. Think I told you that "point" type vibration was better than "vibrate everything".
roobh3
its in the videos and stuff shown as a spining weight.
Sounds Great. Can't wait.
Glad you guys are back, was a bit worried there for a while. Looks great, can't wait to hear as this progresses!

Ooh I can't wait to hear if this Brit can be part of the awesomely exciting 'Gamma testing'...
Waiting with bated breath, Tom.
Woo Hoo!! Thanks for keeping us up to date. Looking forward to seeing your design improvements.
I knew I already commented on this. I guess I wasn't signed in. lol
Thanks again for the update!
Sounds good, enjoying the updates on it's development, looking forward to seeing what it'll be like in the future
That nub looks a little uncomfortable. Still looking forward to beta testing it though.
Ohh happy day!! This is one of those sites I check every night before bed to see if there has been any progress.....and i must say that i was beginning to loose hope...thank you for restoring my hope with a new post:-) Please help an anxious brother out and hurry up with the next "GAMMA trials '09" and let me give you all my feedback!

Yea! an update. Its still small enough to fit in the night stand drawer. The realtouch is huge and requires that you take the computer to bed with you to use it, plus a lot of wires. Waiting for the rubbot go into production soooon.
ya, it's totally night stand compatible!

Phew
progress didnt halt... it skyrocketed so high we all didnt see
Nice progress, very curious as to when and where it will be available
:P
*cheers*
Well ill let you get back to work
. This precedent of 'sudden progress' gave me personally a big confidence boost in rubbot. And if i may be so free, i think that counts for the most of us.
Nice to hear from ya and glad to hear things are moving along and havent gone away..Look forward to whats to come...
glad you guys are making progress. don't forget about us beta tes... i mean gamma testers!
I am so happy to hear everything is progressing. I thought maybe this recession had hit you guys too when you were so quiet.
Waiting impatiently.
Sounds great. Cant wait to get my hands on one.
Its really good to see updates here! the nub/tounge would be more intense i suppose... all depends. once the duct tape and epoxy is designed out...
GAMMA!
It's very exciting to hear that there are new improvements coming out soon. We were starting to worry that you guys forgot about us. Can't wait for this thing to finally go into production. Thanks for keeping up the good work fellas.
Great to see an update after the hiatus. Can't wait to see the next bit of progression.
Looking good. Hope it becomes readily available soon.
